How to Sell Your Art

This is exciting…we’ve had a lot of positive feedback from artists and tons of interest from others interested in selling their art.  The only negative ranting was from an artist whose work was overpriced…by about $2500.  A roadside art market is a great way for emerging artists to test the market.  If you can produce quality work and sell it at a reasonable price, you will do well at Second Saturdays.  Our goal at the Butter Bean is to support local artists and showcase our shop.

Want to sell your work at our next Second Saturdays event? Here are some tips for making sales:

1. Post your prices.  Make sure each item you are selling has a clearly visible tag.  That way customers will not have to ask for prices.  The price on the item is the price they pay.

2. Make sure your booth is interesting.  Hang work at various levels.  Use shelving and display props to show your pieces off.  Bags on a table are not as thrilling to look at as the same handbags strung on a clothesine.  Your booth is your own portable shop.  Make it welcoming and invite people in to browse.

3. Have business cards or brochures handy.  The more professional these marketing tools look, the more likely people will see you as a professional artist.  Make your cards stand out.  Experiment with color and design so people will hold on to your cards.

4. Remember to keep a sense of humor.  Art markets are a great place to network with other artists, find out about upcoming shows and see how the public reacts to your work.  Don’t take yourself too seriously.
